Capitol Hill
Family Oasis
In Capitol Hill, HDID undertook the transformation of a family oasis for a household of five. The project presented several challenges, including opening up the space and creating inventive storage solutions tailored to accommodate children's games, toys, sports equipment, backpacks, and more. To address these needs, HDID strategically installed symmetrical closets flanking the kitchen and integrated customized built-ins under the stairs and within the living room. These additions not only optimized storage but also enhanced the functionality of the space.
A standout feature of the renovation is the newly achieved indoor-outdoor feel on the first floor, facilitated by expansive French doors that seamlessly connect the interior with the exterior. Despite the architectural challenge posed by low ceilings, the space now feels airy and spacious, fostering a welcoming environment for family gatherings and everyday activities.
Throughout the renovation process, HDID encountered and successfully navigated unforeseen challenges inherent in working with an older home. This included filling in structural gaps and addressing historical unknowns, typical of properties with undocumented origins predating historical records.
The project journeyed from overcoming initial design challenges and unexpected hurdles to creating a revitalized living space that harmonizes historic charm with contemporary functionality.
