Lifecycle of a Project: Design Development

After answering a comprehensive questionnaire and completing the Pre-Design phase, our clients are ready for the next phase in the design project: Design Development. This phase is where we get into ALL the details.

The Big Picture

During this phase, we will refine the floor plans and begin to study the space in three dimensions. We’ll begin sourcing FF+E (Finishes, Fixtures, and Equipment) and start logging selections into a master spreadsheet that will be shared with the contractor.

As we source these items, we’ll simultaneously be generating concept boards and ordering material samples of any necessary items required for our clients to see the whole picture.

What is a concept board?

A concept board is created by using carefully chosen images to represent the mood and feel that we would like to create as a final result of the room. Every material and product we are proposing to use will be included, from light fixtures to grout colors.

Why is a concept board important?

A concept board not only allows us to present our overall vision but also opens up a dialogue with the client. A well-put-together concept board will allow the client to understand the color scheme, materials, and overall feel before moving the design phase any further. At this time, we welcome feedback and make revisions to ensure that our client is on board with our vision.

All the Details

In addition to the concept boards, our client will also have access to a comprehensive spreadsheet where we document all the selections made. Our procurement team will then use this information to generate product proposals and eventually track orders.

How long will the design process take?

This process takes time; generally, a few months to complete, depending on the scope and size of the project. As with any creative undertaking, we can provide better results for our clients when we let our ideas “sit on the back burner” and develop fully.

This is one of the most exciting parts of every project! We love seeing our clients’ ideas take shape into something more tangible.
