Lifecycle of a Project: Initial Consultation

With over 20 years of experience, I have had the privilege of working with hundreds of clients, delivering a truly bespoke design experience. Our full-service design offerings encompass design development, project management, and procurement to create beautifully furnished spaces. No matter the project’s scope, we are committed to delivering a sophisticated yet purposeful design that aligns with both aesthetic and budget goals, ensuring our clients feel confident in their investment.
Our process—from initial consultation to final installation— is designed to deliver tailored results to each client. In this article, we would like to discuss the first step in our process: the Initial Consultation.
After an introductory phone call, we’ll schedule a one-hour meeting to walk through the space and discuss the client’s goals. This meeting is all about listening—we take the time to understand the unique features of the space, what the client loves, and what they’d like to change. It’s an opportunity to define preferences, identify challenges, and determine any existing elements to incorporate, whether it’s a cherished antique rug or a structural feature that must remain.
During the scheduled walk-through, we’ll share initial ideas for the project, including a phased approach if applicable. We’ll also discuss preliminary budget considerations, offering guidance on how to create a budget if one hasn’t been established. (For more insights, see my article: "Design Refresh: Where to Start & What to Prioritize.")
Lastly, we’ll outline a general project timeline. Since our availability may not always align with the client’s preferred schedule, setting clear expectations upfront ensures a realistic and well-planned approach to the design process.

Following our consultation, the client will receive a formal proposal detailing the next steps in the design process. This proposal will include a comprehensive outline of the scope of work, design fees, and an estimated project timeline, ensuring clarity and alignment before moving forward.
