Project Profile: Classic Woodley Park

In this month’s project profile, we look at a project that we recently finished in Woodley Park, DC. The client had recently purchased their home and knew right away that they wanted to make some changes. They were particularly interested in restoring some of the living areas that had been neglected over the years.

Like many of our projects, we partnered with a local contractor to deliver a dream home to our clients. In this case, our project started when the client was in the middle of a renovation with Landis construction. The clients worked with Landis on the renovation of their primary suite; we assisted with fixture selections and fielding any questions that popped up along the way.

We also re-designed the first-floor half bath, which was very uninspired. We pulled everything out (except the Toto toilet) and started fresh. We began with a new coat of paint, Moscow Midnight by Sherwin Williams. Next, we selected a modern console sink from Swiss Madison (which turned out to be my favorite element in the space!) and paired that with a vintage mirror that the client had purchased from an online auction. We finished the look with new accessories and a print from Minted created by Amanda Lomax, a friend of the client.

The next components of the house that needed a refresh were the two fireplaces in the living room and dining room. We wanted to preserve the original wood mantel, which was still intact and has lovely detailing. The tile surround and the firebox had seen better days, so we chose an Ann Sacks mosaic marble to modernize the look while preserving the existing feminine detailing.

Another problem area was in the front entry. As is common with many DC row homes, the space lacked a coat closet. We designed a custom cabinet solution that now has plenty of room for each family member. The cabinets are from Signature Cabinetry.

The major part of our project was to assist with furnishing selections. We worked on the living room, dining room, entry, office, and primary bedroom. Fortunately, our client is an avid thrifter and collector with a great eye. She has been cataloging her finds for years, so we had everything we needed when it came to styling. The hardest part was editing down her collection—she has too many great things!

The client had a few pieces that she wanted to reuse (such as a teal sofa and dining set), as well as a few antique pieces passed down from her family (a beautiful office desk). We surveyed her existing pieces and then presented a furniture plan showing where the existing pieces could go and where we would add new pieces. We even included images of the existing pieces into our concept boards so the client could have a better understanding of the complete picture.

The same goes for the artwork we used—our client has a great collection from her travels, so very few new pieces needed to be purchased. For example, the mirror over the mantle in the living room is from Thailand, and prints from China and Ireland were incorporated into the design as well. One of my favorite new artists she introduced to me is Kitty McCall. Her work is so happy; we hung one of her pieces in the entry that sets the tone for the entire home.
